Submissions

The International Conference on Space and Sustainable Development (CEDS 2026) has been conceived as a platform for the exchange of knowledge and ideas on the challenges and opportunities presented by space activities, alongside the search for alternative approaches that enable their sustainable use. With this objective in mind, the conference will address technological and scientific areas, as well as industrial development and national strategies, including the collaborative and legal frameworks necessary for the use of space in a globalised world.

In this context, we invite researchers and academics, as well as professionals from space agencies, government bodies and space research centres in Latin America and the Caribbean and other regions who work in these fields, to submit their research and proposals to this conference, with a view to helping identify strategies and avenues for action to advance space activities and their contribution to global development.

Key topics

1. Spatial development: opportunities and challenges

  • Proposals and/or studies on space development, in accordance with the provisions of the document Space 2030 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This discussion should cover, amongst other things, the following points:
  • The strategic advantages for the development of space activities and planetary technology, facilitating a forward-looking assessment of the new scenarios emerging on a global scale and the scientific challenges arising from them.
  • The role of industry, academia and government: the functions of each entity within a spatial growth policy that strengthens national development.
  • Strategies and regulatory frameworks, with an emphasis on sustainable development that promotes a high degree of social inclusion and economic development.

2. Promoting the development of space science and technology

In a knowledge-based society, a country’s ability to generate value and its standing on the international stage are determined by its level of development and investment in science and technology. In this context, we welcome submissions that address the following topics:

  • Development of space-related sciences: Physics, Data Science, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Space Biology, amongst others.
  • Technological development in key areas: telecommunications, automatic control, geomatics, robotics and related fields.
  • Human capital development: promoting partnerships with industry. The development of new educational programmes is highly desirable.

3. To promote innovation and industrial development in the space sector

Participating in the economic growth generated by the space industry is not an opportunity exclusive to developed countries. In this rapidly expanding sector, there are ample opportunities to share in the economic benefits by developing business areas that actively contribute to the creation of new products and services which, through innovation, can enhance well-being. Among others, the following opportunities are worth considering:

  • Geoprocessing, a key industry for the utilisation of data collected by satellites, drones, aircraft and other Earth observation instruments.
  • Nanosatellites: the major trend of using constellations of nanosatellites to perform some of the functions previously carried out by medium-sized or large satellites.
  • Sensors and instruments: development of sensors for the space industry and its ground-based facilities.
  • Robotics, to contribute to the development of instruments and processes in space and on other planets.
  • Data science, where information and knowledge are derived from the processing of datasets provided by space-based instruments and their various sensors.
  • Artificial Intelligence, the development of capabilities to manage complex systems without human intervention, is key to the deployment of space missions.

4. Space as a World Heritage Site

Given that space belongs to everyone, we are seeking guidance on how to establish legal and collaborative frameworks that ensure its equitable and sustainable use, the creation of business opportunities, the use of cutting-edge technologies and resource management, amongst other aspects. In particular, we welcome contributions on the following topics:

  • Participation in international agreements: distinguishing between those that are universally binding and those that reflect non-binding commitments, as well as analysing and quantifying the role of the private sector.
  • International law: an analysis of space treaties and their amendments in the face of new challenges, demands and the crisis of globalisation.
  • Cooperation, as a means of reducing disparities in space technology and fostering synergies.

Submission of Proposals

  • Proposals must be limited to the topics described above and may be based on experiences, studies or proposals.
  • The official languages are English, Spanish and Portuguese.
  • Proposals must be no longer than 7 pages. Guidelines for authors will be available on the conference website from April 2026.
